Stories and features on the competitors who make it happen.

At a time when motorsports is working to grow participation and connect with the next generation, Hub City Dirt Drags is helping lead that shift by creating visible space for women in diesel motorsports, truck pulling, and the truck show industry.
In 2024, Hub City introduced the Girls Only Zone as part of its Show N Shine. What started as a simple idea quickly became one of the most talked-about additions to the event, drawing women from across the Midwest and beyond who are building trucks, racing, pulling, towing, owning businesses, and influencing truck culture at a high level.
This story is bigger than one event. These women are not on the sidelines of motorsports — they are shaping it.
For the past six years, the Hub City Diesel Truck Challenge has built a reputation as one of the most dynamic diesel competitions in the Midwest.
Held each October during Hub City Dirt Drags weekend, this competition is not just about who is fastest. Competitors are scored through a combined format: a dyno run followed by a double elimination dirt drag race. The truck with the lowest total score wins.
With recent purses ranging from $20,000 to $30,000, the Diesel Truck Challenge rewards horsepower, consistency, strategy, and the ability to perform under pressure.
Past champions include Josh McCormick, Austin Denny, and Nathan Bandstra. But the event is also known for unexpected finishes, mechanical heartbreak, and underdog stories that keep fans coming back.
One of the biggest recent storylines is Johnny Hooper and his homebuilt “John 3:16” truck, which earned major attention after a second-place finish in 2025 and a callout to compete at Ultimate Callout Challenge in Indianapolis.

More Than a Motorsports Event
Hub City Dirt Drags is built on horsepower, community, and tradition. What started as a local motorsports event has grown into one of the Midwest's premier diesel weekends, while staying true to its grassroots roots and commitment to giving back to Richland County.
The current era of Hub City events began in 2006, when Jeff Coy and Viking Village Franchise invested in revitalizing the existing track and grounds. Their vision brought dirt drag racing and truck pulling back to Hub City, laying the foundation for the event thousands of fans enjoy today.
While today's event continues to grow, Hub City's motorsports history reaches back even further. Many locals remember the mud bogs and demolition derbies that packed the grounds throughout the early 1990s.
In 2014, local promoter Riley Anderson began coordinating Hub City events, driven by a passion for adrenaline, competition, and creating an unforgettable experience for competitors and fans alike.
Under Riley's leadership, Hub City Dirt Drags has expanded into a two-day motorsports festival featuring:
Today, competitors and spectators travel from across the Midwest to be part of the Hub City experience.
Hub City Dirt Drags isn't just about racing.
Every event is organized with one goal beyond motorsports—supporting local charities and families in need throughout Richland County.
Funds raised stay local, helping organizations and families within the community.
One of the biggest ways fans help make that possible is by supporting the food and beverage stands throughout the weekend. Every meal, snack, and drink purchased helps give back to the community that makes Hub City possible.
Come hungry. Cheer loud. Help make a difference.
